  • About Kes

  • I'm Kes. The real deal. All that I really give a fuck about is music. I have been playing the pub circuit since 1998...(solo's, duo's and bands) and that's a long time for an apprenticeship! I believe that I have done the hard yards of booking gigs, lugging gear, driving all over the state a couple of times a week.. (often trying to beat the sunrise!!! Heh!), entertaing the toughest, most non-musically minded crowds.... playing at everything from weddings, to pubs, to 18th birthday parties in the stix, bike shows, Support slots (Magic Dirt/Rose Tattoo etc..) , festivals, vineyards, wool shed's, Universities, corporate functions, shopping centres, theatres, car races, street corners... The Bledisloe Cup for fucks sake! This has been my life for years. I live and breathe this shit... Unfortunately in this line of work, you can't ask your boss for a promotion! (And covers seem to be the only thing that pay!) I really want to make something of this, and as naive as "wanting to be a rockstar" sounds, I figure... why not? I mean, you've all heard the shit they're playing on Triple J these days... It gives me hope! (man, if THEY can get on the radio!) Heh! (My mum thinks I'm funny) Anyways, I believe I've racked up enough experience to know what I'm in for, and to take it seriously. I was born into a very musically orientated family. My mum is a massive music fan, plays guitar, is a wicked lighting tech (glorified roadie! heh! don't tell her I said that!) and live music photographer. All of my uncles are music teachers. My old man can't play a note... but he drives trucks so .... ahhh... yeah.... he listens to alot... I'm sure I started singing as soon as I knew how to make noises. I've always been a little entertainer. I taught myself my first chord to prove to my mum that I did'nt just want to do it because my big brother was learning.. (He's an M.C and a D.J now for the record... ) I was taken to an Alice Cooper concert and sent off to lessons. I started playing acoustic at school assemblies, and got my first band and pub gig by 14. Mum had to come... and I had to leave straight after the gig, but so began my journey into rock'n'roll. I played in bands all through my teens, and kept writing acoustic stuff as well. I actually had a damn good shot at being an acoustic solo artist. When I finished school, I left my home town of Orange, moved to Byron, and worked on my acoustic tunes. When I moved back after nearly a year, I took my songs to the Sydney scene. I won a National songwriting competition called "Face The Music"... and scored a little write up in Drum Media and a consultation with Peter Billing. This led to some pretty cool gigs, and I started playing places like "The Gaelic Club", "The Marquee", and "The Coogee Bay Hotel" on Sundays (all originals). I started building up a following, but, looking back, I don't think I was ready, and I don't think that the acoustic genre is where I truely shine. I also think there's alot of girls out there who can sit on a stool and strum and sing much better than me!!! Last year I was focused on "The Filthy Rich". Which is the child of my covers band "Slow Motion Walter". The best way to describe it would be dirty, garage, oz rock. After comparing the impact I could make on a crowd acoustically, with the reaction I recieved fronting "The Filthy Rich", I think I've found my strengths. I love being able to put my guitar down and prowl, get up in peoples faces... really interact and communicate. I am more comfortable performing than I am making a phone call. I thrive on being a frontperson. It's what I'm going to do with my life. Since moving to Melbourne this year, I have signed to a small blues label "Black Market Music" I believe that I have something to offer, and that with the right band, things will happen. my only priority is having a go at cracking my dream. The music at the moment is blues/rock, Find me on Myspace http://www.myspace.com/kesrox (There's a demo of one of the blues tunes... think ZZ Top) http://www.myspace.com/kestfr http://www.myspace.com/filthyrichbaby If you're on the same page... I can't wait to jam. I'm real. I'm raw. I'm ready. Rock'n'Roll.
