Interview with Catherine Traicos, 08.09.09

  1. How did your band meet?

I primarily play as a solo musician but have the pleasure of having some of Australia's finest performers appearing on my albums (and sometimes on stage). On my latest release, Nick Huggins (Touch Typist), Henry F. Skerritt, Emma Frichot and Gareth Skinner (The Holy Sea) and Phil Natt (Ammonia) appear. I'm not quite sure how we all met - I think it was at each others' shows while we were out watching local acts.

  2. Where did the idea for your band's name come from?

I am named after my grandmother and her mother was a runaway. I think she found some stability in the name Catherine. It's very earthy and can mean anything from "pure" to "witch".

  3. What music has inspired your band?

Tom Waits, Elliott Smith, The Jesus And Mary Chain

  4. Use three words to sum up your band?

    Mellow; Soulful; Fragile

  5. What venue would you most like to play at?

    Carnegie Hall

  6. If you had a choice, who would be your support band?

    Tom Waits.

  7. Three people dead or alive you would invite to your gig, and why?

Tom Waits because he makes my world go round. Lou Reed - no explanation needed. Alma Mahler to see if she hit on me.

  8. What are you listening to at the moment?

The Flying Burrito Brothers - The Gilded Palace of Sin. I've just taken to putting my music on random when working on non-music related things. Who knows what will be next? Oh, Flaming Lips.

  9. Where will your band be in five years from now?

The Bahamas chillaxing after our third world tour.

  10. Any tips you would like to share with your fellow muso's?

Get yourself a good manager to fill in these interview forms for you because mine refuses to do this. Seriously though, if you play because you love it you are never going to be disappointed.

  11. Do you live the Rock n Roll lifestyle?

Alas no, unless you count copious cups of tea as 'Rock 'n' Roll'. Whilst on tour recently I did accidentally break a light fitting in a hotel room. I was cut a little by the shards. It was a bit of an Emo rock moment I guess.
