Interview with Chops, 08.08.09

  1. What music has inspired you?

I'd have to say more natural, organic sounding pop noise is much more easier on the ears in comparison to many releases coming out these days. You can't deny some older tunes have captured my ears attention. Ella Fitzgerald's instrumentations are ace, along with the 'call and response' notions of The Mamas & The Papas. And finally, movie soundtrack songs. The trailer music to the 2003 film, 'Last Life in the Universe' and the DVD Menu music to the 2004/5? film, 'Vera Drake' are top notch. The moods and atmospheres they evoke are fantastic.

  2. Use three words to sum yourself up?

    Strange. Different. Overweight.

  3. What music are you listening to at the moment?

Alot of older stuff as well as some 'not so chart friendly' pop songs. One stand out is Boh Runga. She used to be in a band called 'Stellar*' who had a few gems over the years, which gradually progressed into a more mellow pop sound towards the end of their releases. Boh's solo effort, 'Right Here', is something I'd like to emulate on my record, if such a concept materialises...

  4. If you had a choice to play one song, what would it be, and why?

'Listening For The Weather' by Bic Runga. This was one of the first proper pop songs I learned to play on the keyboard. Love the harmonies and lyrics to the track.

  5. Where will you be in five years from now?

I would love to say sweet and swell with a steady and established music/acting career (yeah folks, I'm one of 'those' people) but I can't be sure of where I'll be. Maybe working the same job at the factory? Or 6 feet under? Let's hope it's not the latter.

  6. What venue would you most like to play at?

Haven't been out in yonks, but I like the sheer friendly feel (give or take after a few for some) of Pubs, and not some wanky place overcharging for simple things such as water.

  7. If you had a choice, who would be your support band?

There was an artist on Triple J along time ago, by the name of Princess 2.0. Her track, 'The Truth' had some strange yet intriguing lyrics happening, along with a very 'Sarah Blasko'-like sound, which I enjoy very much so. Her, or just round up that tall, brunette one from S Club 7 that never sang anything. I hear she's coming back or something..

  8. Have you ever played in a band before, and if so who?

Not really. I did collaborate with some school buddies during my HSC period (both performance and recording) but beyond that, it was all my own thing. I guess that's my problem, sometimes? I like things suited to my taste most times, so writing sessions with me sometimes can be slightly frustrating.

  9. Three people you would invite to your gig and why?

My two best mates from High School as support, and Lady Gaga, so I could spit on her face for ruining music.

  10. Any tips you would like to share with your fellow musos?

Don't have an ego. They're ugly little minions sitting in your ears telling you that your s*** doesn't stink, when in fact, it reeks. Everyone is the same underneath.

  11. Do you live the Rock n Roll lifestyle?

I love to relax in my Go-Lo bought armchair and sip my Homebrand Instant Coffee, in my little unit out in the west. I'm living the life.
