Interview with The Planetary Poets, 05.08.09

  1. How did your band meet?

The band is not complete yet - but I (Jude) bought a recording studio and started hiring it out for rehearsals. A band came in a couple of times with a very cool drummer - they didnt work out - but we did - and Paul and I have been tight since.

  2. Where did the idea for your band's name come from?

Well, actually it was a visionary experience to be honest when i was sitting in the lunch room of the plant nursery i was working in in July 1993. It's taken this long to come together - although in the late '90s we had a brief fireup when at university in Armidale NSW.

  3. What music has inspired your band?

For me personally - I guess Pink Floyd and Jimi Hendrix really shaped me early in the process and have probably had the greatest impact on me. Stevie Ray Vaughn, Clapton and Santana also rated highly. They were all classics for a reason I suppose. I was a real metal head as a teenager and my love for solid heavy guitars and grooves is as strong now as ever. Falling in love for the first time softened me significantly though and at around 18 when I started playing guitar I got more into blues and folky stuff for a time. I never wanted to play other peoples music though so i generally just took chords and made them into tunes in my own way always striving to give myself those shivers up the back of the neck you know - thats how I tell really good music.

  4. Use three words to sum up your band?

    cosmic, timeless, unique

  5. What venue would you most like to play at?

on a forest stage in the trees - like Sarawak or Costa Rica or something. Apparently Red Rock in the US is really cool. But my favourite would have to be on a piece of land that I have my heart set on just at the base of Mt Warning in NSW. If I'm playing on "that" stage then it means i must have bought the land and built it and thats what really floats my boat.

  6. If you had a choice, who would be your support band?

    Ben Green

  7. Three people dead or alive you would invite to your gig, and why?

Jimi Hendrix for a start - so i could give a bit back to him and show him yeah - i"ve been experienced. My mum eh - she would be so proud - she's my biggest fan ;-) David Gilmour - i always have dreamed of playing on the same stage with him and jamming to some of my tunes. I would love to hear what he would do with them.

  8. What are you listening to at the moment?

Mainly music that I have been recording for local artists lately and my own demos - picking them to pieces. The WAMI cd this year has been spinning a lot and when i've been building and painting and stuff in the studio - Classic FM - its awesome to zone out to classical.

  9. Where will your band be in five years from now?

I think by that stage we'll probably have transformed pretty well right over into the Electronic / Trance sort of genre and be touring the Global Festival scene - well thats what i would hope. We're not into becoming slaves to a Major Label - which is why we have started our own - Akashic Records - so touring flexibility and enjoyment is the lifestyle we are looking to create. All this is assuming that there is in fact a world in 5 years ;-)

  10. Any tips you would like to share with your fellow muso's?

whoa - yeah - right o - crystals are not just for hippies and new agers so use them from the heart and program your water as well. Align your desires with your higher purpose and you'll have the whole universe in your corner. Give thanks often and look for the real meanings

  11. Do you live the Rock n Roll lifestyle?

I guess so - in a way i'm already living my dreams. I have bouts of decadence tempered with periods of sharp self discipline to keep it all in balance. The coming few years are shaping up to be the best ever.
