  • About Linus Lane

  • Linus Lane is an enigma wrapped in a riddle with a side serve of obvious. If you can understand what that means, please write to him and explain it. Specifically, Linus is a musician, cartoonist, writer, comedian and video maker. And for the record, that IS his real name. The Melbourne based artist recorded his debut music album last year, titled Turn Up Your Hearing Aid. The 13 track LP is a collection of pop punk songs that Linus has written since the age of 15, forming a retrospective look at growing up and the passing of time. Although sitting comfortably in the radio-rock genre, with addictive melodies, tight machine-gun-like guitars and feverish drum beats, Turn Up Your Hearing Aid also features a variety of songs and styles, including heartfelt ballads, hack hop (er, hip hop) and even a tribute to AC/DC style rock. What unites all the songs is a sly sense of humour, a unique and thought-provoking outlook on the world, killer sweet harmonies and catchy poppy goodness. Linus is somewhat of an auteur, preferring to work alone where possible so as not to compromise the crystal clear vision he has for his music and art. In keeping with this, Linus recorded the singing, back-up vocals, guitar, bass and drums for Turn Up Your Hearing Aid himself, before getting the tracks professionally mastered. At gigs, Linus performs his songs solo, singing and playing guitar live to pre-recorded backing tracks which feature drums, bass and backing vocals (all recorded by himself). Linus is unapologetic about this unusual approach. His manager/mentor Dave has reffered to Linus' songs as "car-tune" (cartoon) music. Whilst the inclusion of pre-recorded music in rock and roll concerts may cause controversy among live music fans, this method allows Linus to work the way he works best: on his own. It permits him to pursue his dream unwaveringly, and to keep a kick-arse, full band sound no matter what size venue or crowd he is playing to. The artist’s performances are interlaced with stand-up comedy, featuring Linus’ unique take on life, ensuring a thoroughly live and intimate experience. Linus has spent many years developing a fresh, quirky and innovative approach to song writing and music, in an attempt to stand out among (and justify his existence within) the whitewash of songs flooding the 21st century. This has ultimately involved incorporating cartoons, videos and websites in conjunction with his music and live performances, to create a veritable multimedia circus. For example, Linus illustrated and designed all of the album art (including a 12 page booklet filled with original illustrations and comics) that comes with Turn Up Your Hearing Aid. Linus also writes and stars in a YouTube video titled The Linus Lane Show. Best described as a sitcom/documentary/skit show/music show, the ongoing series stars Linus as himself: an unlikely and geeky wannabe rockstar, who is living at home with his parents without a car, a girlfriend, or much of a chance of breaking into the music industry. The show also stars Linus’ unlikely music manager and mentor Dave. Dave is a middle aged, washed up musician, whose bitterness and self-obsessions make him as much of a hindrance to Linus’ quest for stardom as an aid. Thoroughly technology phobic (and unconsciously just as eager to see Linus fail as succeed), Dave is an analogue manager in a digital world. Together, these two tragic characters are on a journey of self discovery as they attempt to flee a mundane, outer-eastern suburban life in Melbourne. Art imitates life, and in reality (as well as in the show) Linus is just making his first tentative steps from his bedroom into the real world. Yet he has already received a positive response from people within the music industry. Julia Sykes, Ozjam reviewer and founder of Syke’s Music, a Perth based music school, recently wrote: “Linus Lane could be the next big thing. [He has] a great, powerful sound with good lyrics. Guitar, bass and drums are well played and written… [Linus has] lots of potential with a sound that will be very popular”. Another Ozjam reviewer Simon Forman, from the music industry marketing company Pitch Perfect, said of Turn Up Your Hearing Aid: “The songs are catchy and the lyrics display a wry sense of humour... this could have a wide appeal”. Dave Brady, owner of Epic Radio, described the musician as “[a] man with some interesting ideas, some interesting songs as well”, and according to Andrew Ryan, booking agent for Mojo’s bar, Linus' music is “[v]ery catchy, highly entertaining... Linus Lane is on the right track...I’m pretty certain if [he doesn’t] have gigs lined up right now, they are on their way!”. Although Linus’ career in music is just starting out, it is clear this Melbourne artist has a strong and unique vision of where he wants to go. The next few years will be a formative and pivotal time for Linus Lane. Turn up YOUR hearing aid and don’t miss out on this fresh and exciting new Australian talent as he attempts to, as his mentor Dave would say, “crash or crash through...” Check out Linus Lane’s music, comics, and videos as well as news and gig updates at www.linuslane.com Email: linuslane@live.com

To put music of a high quality out there, that is thought-provoking, enjoyable, humorous, and life enhancing. To be the next big thing in pop punk/radio rock.
