About Amy Vee
- Lovely ghostly folk – Steph Hughes, Triple J. Amy began charming audiences with her ethereal indie pop repertoire at a tender age, playing solo showcases in venues up and down the East Coast of Australia during the early 2000s. During these formative years, it was Amy’s enchanting vocals and unconventional guitar style that caught the attention of audiences and industry peers. Amy’s unique voice was sought after, allowing her to perform and record with some Australian dance music greats such as Groove Terminator (as Australian tour support for Moby) and ON (ABC Music Awards Artist of the Year). However, it was the self-penned and honest musings of the quiet Novocastrian psychology student that led to a small grant from a local label to feature on a compilation album of works from regional artists. The humble fruits of these sessions contributed to a debut 4-track EP. The title track topped the Australia mp3 charts in its category for over 8 weeks. Shortly after, Amy recruited three like-minded friends to form a new musical collective known as Amy Vee & The Virtues. The band were the perfect complement to Amy’s sweet subversive music, and proved so on the band’s first EP, described by Australian Musician’s Media as “truly magical… definitely worth having on your play list”. The band went on to record their debut album in 2007 and shared the stage with international and local touring acts including Hawksley Workman, The Whitlams, Little Birdy, and many more. The band also enjoyed national airplay and picked up several music industry gongs, including MUSICOZ Artist of the Year (2005) and even a nomination for an LA Music Award (2007). Taking nothing for granted, Amy has recently made a welcome return to her humble beginnings as a solo songwriter and performer. Amy performed several shows in Canada in early 2009, after she was selected from thousands of hopefuls to showcase at Canadian Music Week in Toronto. Amy’s new EP “Sleeping Dogs Lie” was released in September 2009 and Amy has since been captivating audiences in Newcastle, Sydney, Central Coast, Blue Mountains, Adelaide, Canberra and Melbourne as she weaves through stories of a girl well-travelled and often lost. Amy also recently performed a month long tour of England and Scotland to critical acclaim. Amy performs as a soloist, her intricate melodies punctuated with lilting acoustic guitar and the occassional use of live loops, percussion and melodica.
